Mr. Hamster Goes to Washington

I got an email a couple of weeks back from a lovely lady named Kathleen. It seems she was walking along near her home in DC and saw "a weird tiny creature ambling around on the street near the storm drain." Just as when I first found Wilhelm, Kathleen thought that the animal was a rat. But she picked him up (oh, we are kindred spirits!) and took him home. In later days, she surmised that a litter of hamster babies was dumped on the street, and she had rescued one of them. She named the little guy (who was soaking and cold when she found him) Tater Tot... and loved and cared for him so that now, as Kathleen reports, he is "thriving and very furry, active, and curious!"

Here's a picture of Tater the morning after Kathleen rescued him:

Here's a photo of Tater figuring out what snacks are :)

And here's Tater 10 days later.. very cute and happy!

In addition to rescuing this poor little guy from the mean streets of DC (well, mean to a hamster), Kathleen also made a donation to the New York Hamster House!

Kathleen, I hereby officially declare you the NYHH Rescuer of the Month :) Put that on your resume!

Hurrah! A happy ending for the little guy.

I always feel conflicted when I read these stories; on the one hand, I am so pissed off at the people who do such horrible things to animals (like the guy who put out glue traps when he lost his hamster). But on the other hand, I'm so happy that there are wonderful people out there who rescue the little guys and take good care of them. I'm glad that I donate to the NYHH, which provides a safe haven for Kaiser Wilhelms everywhere. :)
